Abstract

Forests play an important role in carbon sequestration and storage through various ecosystem components, including litter and dead wood. This study aimed to estimate the biomass and carbon stocks of litter and dead wood in the Amahusu Music Forest, Nusaniwe District, Ambon City. Data were collected using a stratified purposive sampling method with nine observation plots measuring 20 m × 20 m, representing different canopy density levels, namely dense, moderate, and sparse canopies. Biomass and carbon stock estimations were conducted based on the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) 7724:2019. The results showed that the average litter biomass was 0.23 kg per plot, with an average estimated carbon stock of 0.11 kg per plot or equivalent to 1.10 tons ha¹. The total estimated litter carbon stock in the study area was 5.48 tons. Meanwhile, the total dead wood biomass reached 72.78 kg, with an average of 8.09 kg per plot. The average estimated carbon stock of dead wood was 3.80 kg per plot or equivalent to 0.38 tons ha¹, resulting in a total carbon stock of 1.90 tons. The distribution of biomass and carbon stocks in both components varied among plots, reflecting differences in vegetation characteristics and canopy density. These findings indicate that litter and dead wood are important carbon pools in the Amahusu Music Forest and contribute significantly to the ecological function of forests in climate change mitigation.
